Some time last year, Grandpa conceived of a creative way to travel to the 2008 Monroe Reunion. Buy a motorhome and visit all places significant on his way out to the Olympic peninsula. He probably calculated the average wait time at airport security and figured that a cross-country trip would be a better use of his time.
Only two other family members match the main criteria for this endeavor (lack of sense and employment): me and Mom. Alas, three generations (one Old Fogey, one Wahoo, and one Whipper Snapper) of Monroes/Sadtlers will be traveling across the country en route to Fort Worden State Park. If I get my hands on a wireless card between then and now, we will blog on a regular basis. If not, we will drop in from time to time with pics and updates whenever we approach civilization.
The trip begins on July 3rd.

- When you buy more than 3 gallons of gas at the Mustang Gas Station in Many Farms, AZ, they will give you one package of Keebler "Club & Cheddar" Crackers. So technically, they owe us 20 packages of crackers.
- The population of Mexican Hat, UT is 40 or 42. Question: Who’s missing or hasn’t shown up yet?
- Upon entering California, you must first submit to a vehicle inspection by the Dept of Agriculture. Since we're from the east coast, they accused us of harboring gypsy moths. Snobs.
- In Klamath River, OR it is illegal to "walk down a sidewalk and knock a snake's head off with your cane." It's about time!
- In Seattle, you may not carry a concealed weapon that is over 6 feet in length. Think about that for a minute...
- The population of Chewelah, WA has declined since 1912. Once 2500 inhabitants has dwindled to under 1800. During our day and a half there, we met 13 residents, that is .75% of the population.
- According to Montana State Fish, Wildlife, & Parks, after killing a bear, one must “present for inspection the complete bear hide with proof of sex remaining naturally attached.”
- According to the police blotter in the July 14 issue of the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, “an injured duck with a fish hook in its lower jaw was reported at Bozeman Ponds.”
- Regular gas in Montana is 85.5 octane, rather than 87. Not a soul in the Greater Bozeman area has any idea why. And yes, we asked.
- Earl and Barbara will depart Kensington on July 3rd. They will blaze through seven states before Ted joins them in Billings on July 13.
- The proposed itinerary covers approx. 8000 miles and 21 states!

This is kind of an "African Caravan" type of trip. Earl must have wished for a similar adventure. Sounds fun and I hope you find interesting Monroe tidbits.... Love, Anne
